JD Sports Fashion has announced two important leadership appointments as the sports and fashion retailer continues to focus on growth in North America. John Mersho has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of JD North America, while Mike Grimes has become Chief Marketing Officer for JD Group. Both appointments are effective immediately.

The leadership changes come at an important time for JD Sports. North America is the company’s largest region and accounted for about 38% of JD Group sales in fiscal 2026, making the region a major part of its global business strategy.

Who Is the New JD Sports North America CEO?

John Mersho is the new President and CEO of JD North America.

Before taking the new position, Mersho served as Chief Commercial Officer for JD North America since 2025. He is also part of the family behind Shoe Palace, the U.S. footwear retailer founded by the Mersho family in 1993. JD Sports acquired Shoe Palace in 2020.

Mersho brings extensive experience in footwear and sportswear retail to his new role. His previous work within the JD organization and his background with Shoe Palace give him experience across different parts of the North American retail market.

He takes over the North America CEO role following the retirement of John Hall, who spent about four decades in retail and played an important role in the development of JD’s North American business.

What Will John Mersho Do at JD Sports?

As President and CEO of JD North America, Mersho will focus on several areas of the business.

His responsibilities include strengthening JD’s product offering, improving the customer experience across physical and digital channels, and expanding the company’s brand presence in North America.

The company operates several retail businesses in the region, including JD, Hibbett, Shoe Palace, DTLR and Finish Line. JD Sports said North America had more than 2,500 stores across its different retail banners.

This gives Mersho responsibility across a large and diverse retail operation.

Who Is JD Sports’ New Chief Marketing Officer?

Mike Grimes has been appointed Chief Marketing Officer for JD Group.

Grimes has a long history with the company. He has worked with JD and Finish Line for nearly two decades and previously served as Chief Marketing Officer for JD North America. He originally joined the business as a Director of Marketing in 2008.

In his new role, Grimes will take a broader global responsibility.

He will help guide the long-term direction of the JD brand across international markets. His work will include strengthening the company’s customer proposition, using customer insights, developing brand partnerships and supporting the company’s overall marketing strategy.

Why Are These JD Sports Leadership Changes Important?

The appointments give JD Sports dedicated leadership for two major areas: North American operations and global marketing.

North America has become JD Group’s largest region. The company reported that the region represented around 38% of group sales in fiscal 2026, with approximately £4.8 billion in sales.

Because of this scale, decisions involving stores, products, digital shopping, brand partnerships and customer experience in North America can have a significant impact on JD Sports’ wider business.

The company has also described North America as a significant growth opportunity.

JD Sports’ North American Retail Business

JD Sports has built a large retail presence in North America through a combination of its own JD stores and acquired or established retail brands.

Its North American portfolio includes:

  • JD
  • Hibbett
  • Shoe Palace
  • DTLR
  • Finish Line

According to company information, the region had more than 2,500 stores. The group is also continuing the process of converting some standalone Finish Line stores to JD locations.

This broad network allows JD Sports to serve different customer groups, styles and retail markets.

What Could the New Leadership Focus On?

The company has identified several areas connected to its North American strategy.

For John Mersho, the focus includes the product proposition, customer experience, omnichannel retail and continued expansion of JD’s presence in North America.

For Mike Grimes, the focus is broader. As Group CMO, he will work on the long-term direction of the JD brand globally while helping different markets maintain a consistent brand vision.

The company also wants to strengthen its relationships with major brands and use its own-brand portfolio and customer insights to improve the customer proposition.

Both appointments took effect immediately, according to JD Sports Fashion.

What This Means for JD Sports

The new appointments show JD Sports‘ continued focus on North America while also creating a broader global marketing leadership role.

John Mersho will lead the company’s North American business at a time when the region represents a major share of JD Group sales. Mike Grimes will move from a regional marketing position into a group-wide role covering the JD brand internationally.

Together, their responsibilities cover two important areas of JD Sports’ strategy: growing its North American retail business and strengthening its global brand proposition.

JD Sports is also planning an analyst and investor field trip in Florida from October 13 to 15, 2026, where management will discuss progress in North America and visit stores.

Conclusion

JD Sports’ appointment of John Mersho as President and CEO of JD North America and Mike Grimes as Group Chief Marketing Officer represents a significant change in the company’s leadership structure.

Mersho will focus on the North American business, while Grimes will take responsibility for the JD brand’s marketing direction across the wider group. With North America representing a large share of JD Sports’ sales, the two executives will have important roles as the retailer continues to develop its stores, digital channels, products, partnerships and customer experience.
